PITTSBURGH -- Levi Brown practiced for the first time with the Steelers on Monday, but the plan, according to leader of the offensive line, is for Kelvin Beachum ...

... to replace Mike Adams as the team's starting left tackle Sunday in New York against the 2-2 Jets.

Beachum and Brown rotated at left tackle with the first team Monday, while Adams played both left and right tackle for the scout team.

Ramon Foster, who missed practice with a chest injury, expects to return to play left guard Sunday, and he expects to play next to Beachum.

"Beach is the guy penciled to start right now," Foster said. "Beach'll be fine. I'm not worried about him. He's a smart guy. He has really good technique, so he's the guy. I'm sure they're going to try to work Levi in somewhere but Beach will be the starter this week."

Beachum, of course, was a four-year starter at left tackle for SMU before the Steelers drafted him in the seventh round in 2012. He started the final five games at right tackle last season, played a bit of tight end before moving to center in this season's opener, and then rotated at the tackle spots with Adams and Marcus Gilbert in the third and fourth games.

Beachum finished the Minnesota game at left guard after Foster was hurt.

Brown, from Norfolk, Va., was a four-year starter at left tackle for Penn State before the Arizona Cardinals drafted him fifth overall in 2007. The Cardinals re-signed Brown to a $30 million, five-year contract in March of 2012, but he tore a triceps muscle in August and was put on injured reserve for the season.

Brown returned this season and allowed 3 sacks to Robert Quinn in the opening-day loss to the St. Louis Rams, and has allowed 4 sacks and 18 QB pressures in four games before the Cardinals renegotiated his contract and traded him to the

Steelers for a conditional late-round pick. While Cardinals coach Bruce Arians told the Arizona media that Brown came back a different player after his injury, Brown's hoping he just needed a change of scenery.

"It's definitely a new start," said Brown, who was asked how he can help the Steelers.

"I'm a veteran," said the 6-5 1/4, 324-pounder. "They have a lot of young guys at the tackle position, so I'm going to teach them what I've learned over the years -- good things, bad things, what to expect. Things don't always go your way but you just fight through it. You're good enough to play if you're here. Just fight through those things, learn the technique, and just roll with it."

If Brown can't regain his form, the Steelers can cut him at any time without cap implications. To that end, the Steelers remain committed to Adams as a tackle.

Adams said he's heard no talk of moving to guard, but is struggling with his pass protection. Adams has been credited with allowing 4 sacks and 12 QB pressures this season.

"It can be corrected," Adams said. "Ben (Roethlisberger) got hit too much. I've just got to get better."

NOTES -- Rookie RB Le'Veon Bell said his foot feels fine and that leaving the last game was because "I thought it was worse that it was. It was a little scare. I came out a play and went back in." ... Rookie WR Markus Wheaton said he'll miss Sunday's game with a broken pinkie finger, and that he'll see a doctor on Monday for an update. ... CB Isaiah Green was signed to the practice squad.
