Steelers change back-up kickers
Bironas (6-0, 200) was a member of the Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League in 2004, and ranked third on the team with 121 points. The 26-year-old Bironas converted 17-of-40 field-goal attempts and 70-of-80 extra points in his only season with the Cobras.
In 2003, Bironas played in 12 games with the Charleston Swamp Foxes of the Arena Football 2 League, where he converted 12-of-27 field-goal attempts during the season and ranked among team leaders with 94 points. Bironas was invited to training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, but was released prior to the regular season. He originally signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2002, but was released during training camp.
The Steelers made room on their roster for Bironas by releasing first-year kicker John Markham, a first-year player who signed with the Steelers as a free agent Feb. 10, 2004.
Bironas will wear uniform number 6.
