St. Pierre cut; practice squad formed

Posted Sep 6, 2004

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers cut third-string quarterback Brian St. Pierre on Monday to make room for wide receiver Sean Morey, who was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Morey (5-11, 200), is a third-year player who spent the past two seasons with the Eagles. He was the Eagles' special teams most valuable player in 2003.

The Steelers also announced the signing of seven players to their practice squad. Five of the seven players were in training camp with the team this summer.

Among the five players who re-signed with the Steelers were three 2004 draft picks: offensive tackle Bo Lacy (6a), center/long-snapper Drew Caylor (6c) and defensive end Eric Taylor (7th); second-year running back Dante Brown; and rookie free-agent defensive tackle Grant Bowman.

The Steelers also signed two wide receivers who were released by other teams this summer: Andrae Thurman, who was in camp with the Houston Texans, and Walter Young, who was in camp with the Carolina Panthers and played in seven games with Carolina in 2003 before being placed on the reserve/injured list.

NFL teams can sign up to eight players to their practice squad for the first time this season. Prior to this year, the limit was five players.
