Q & A with LB Clint Kriewaldt

Posted Nov 20, 2004

GVB: You have to be so pleased with the way things are falling into place for this team, but there still seems to be such a level-headed attitude in this locker room, still a lot of football to be played.

Kriewaldt: Oh, definitely. We just crossed the halfway point and we don't want to get too high with the highs or low with the lows. Everything seems pretty high right now and guys are keeping a pretty level head. We understand there's a lot of season left. We just have to go about things the way we have been, taking one week at a time no matter who it is. Everybody is good in this league and we have to prepare as if they're good.

GVB: It's been almost infectious, too. Guys have gone down with injuries but someone has stepped up. It seems almost as if everyone has stepped up to the breach.

Kriewaldt: There's a lot of injuries all around the league. A time like this, everybody steps up. You're supposed to be good and you're supposed to know what you're doing, so we're confident in all of our backups. They're always told that if the guy ahead of them goes down, we expect them to step in and do just as good.

GVB: People talk about facets of the game: the offense has been doing so many things well, the defense, the special teams for the most part-and you're a special teams demon-for the most part you guys have done a pretty good job.

Kriewaldt: We've done pretty well the last few weeks. Just that one let-down. And it's nice that the defense is right there to pick us up. That's something we have to get rid of heading into the end of the season. We have to do something more pronounced, do something to help this team. We have the penalties and that one play per game. We need to turn that from a bad play to a good play to help the offense and defense.

GVB: You're part of this defense. Tell me what the difference is from this year to last year because basically, if you look at it, it's mostly the same guys. What's the difference?

Kriewaldt: I tried thinking about that, too, and I don't know. Dick LeBeau is a huge part of that. He is a very good coach and he has the respect of the players on this defense. Guys are willing to do anything for him. I would say that it's him and guys playing as hard as they can every game.

GVB: Final comment: final division game against the Bengals. Second trip to Ohio and the second time with them is always tough.

Kriewaldt: It's tough to be on the road. The Bengals are a good team. We have our work cut out for us this week with them wanting to knock us off. It's going to be a tough game. We'll work hard this week and see what we can do.

GVB: What are the keys this week against the Bengals? I guess just play your game.

Kriewaldt: All we have to do is just play our game and play smart football. They have a tough offense. We have to try to take away the run and the pass. Like you said, just play our game and do it. We'll control them.

GVB: I appreciate it.

Kriewaldt: No problem.
