Steelers: Batch, Haynes sign contracts

PITTSBURGH – The Steelers didn't draft a quarterback to challenge Brian St. Pierre for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart. Instead they re-signed quarterback Charlie Batch to a one-year contract.

Batch will make the league-mandated $750,000 veteran minimum but will count only $450,000 against the salary cap.

Batch went on injured reserve Aug. 18 after a knee injury. He underwent microfracture surgery to regenerate cartilage growth and recently passed his physical with the Steelers.

He's been with the Steelers since 2002 and has thrown only 8 passes (4 completions) in that time. Batch spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

St. Pierre will enter his third camp with the team. He scuttled between the practice squad and active roster last season. He played in Buffalo in the regular-season finale and did not complete his only pass.

Also Wednesday, Verron Haynes signed his one-year contract tender for $656,000. Haynes is the Steelers' running back on passing downs. He rushed for 272 yards (4.8 avg.) and caught 18 passes for 142 yards (7.9 avg.) last season.
