Two former camp phenoms among early cuts
Young had looked good early in camp this year, but a hamstring injury sidelined him for a week and killed his momentum.
Cobb, meanwhile, had been a camp phenom last year before breaking his leg in the team's first preseason game. Despite getting constant props from know-nothing TV and radio fools as the sleeper to make the team this year, Cobb did nothing to warrant such praise this year.
The Steelers also released seven-year veteran fullback/tight end Matt Cushing and eight-year veteran wide receiver Chris Doering.
Cushing had spent the preseason trying to make the team exclusively at fullback after spending the past six seasons with the Steelers as a tight end and emergency fullback. Doering signed with the Steelers as a free agent on Aug. 11 because of a rash of injuries at the wide receiver position. He had spent most of the past two seasons with the team.
In addition to Cobb and Young, also released were offensive tackle Josh Burr, defensive back Vontez Duff, center Joe Iorio, offensive tackle Morgan Davis, kicker Shaun Suisham and guard Jake Verstraete.
All NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4.
