So the Steelers used some of the $3 million of cap space to sign quarterback
Charlie Batch to a two-year, $2-million deal. His average annual salary of $1
million makes him better paid than Tommy Maddox, the team's starting
quarterback. Maddox signed a five-year contract in June when he was still a
backup that averages $931,250. He will receive a $650,000 salary this year with
another $75,000 in bonuses before the season begins. The Steelers are
considering whether to restructure Maddox's contract to increase his pay.
Batch became the Steelers' third-string quarterback behind Kordell Stewart and
Tommy Maddox, who moved up to No. 1 four games into the season. Batch was active
for only one game, that being Nov. 24 when he moved up to No. 2 against
Cincinnati because Maddox was made inactive after a spinal-cord injury in
Tennessee.
