Steelers Sign QB Batch

Posted Mar 14, 2003

The Steelers reworked the contracts of Alan Faneca and Aaron Smith to free up money to sign free safety Dexter Jackson. Instead, Jackson signed with Arizona.

So the Steelers used some of the $3 million of cap space to sign quarterback Charlie Batch to a two-year, $2-million deal. His average annual salary of $1 million makes him better paid than Tommy Maddox, the team's starting quarterback. Maddox signed a five-year contract in June when he was still a backup that averages $931,250. He will receive a $650,000 salary this year with another $75,000 in bonuses before the season begins. The Steelers are considering whether to restructure Maddox's contract to increase his pay.

Batch became the Steelers' third-string quarterback behind Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox, who moved up to No. 1 four games into the season. Batch was active for only one game, that being Nov. 24 when he moved up to No. 2 against Cincinnati because Maddox was made inactive after a spinal-cord injury in Tennessee.
