| Biography: |
| Willie Williams UFA Steelers – The 12-year pro looked like he was at the end of the line after the 2003 season. In fact, when he was signed by Pittsburgh last season, some close to the situation say that they weren’t sure that he was even going to make the team. However, he had a revival of sorts last season and wound up starting the final 10 games of the regular season for injured starter Chad Scott. Williams plays a smart game and rarely is caught out of position. While he doesn’t have enough speed to keep up with most receivers, he makes up for it with good footwork and technique. Williams proved that he still has enough left in the tank and should have a few seasons left in a nickel role.
Willie Williams re-signed with the Steelers in May 2004. Originally a sixth round draft choice of the Steelers (1993), Williams played 4 seasons in Pittsburgh before signing on with Seattle in 1998, via free agency, to become their starting right cornerback. He was a starter for most of the first 3 of his 6 seasons as a Seahawk. He comes back to Pittsburgh with 25 interceptions and 105 passes defensed over his career thus far.
While originally with the Steelers, Williams
became the starting right cornerback in 1995 and shortly after moved to the left side, where he stayed as a starter for the rest of the season, including the playoffs and Superbowl XXX. He led the AFC and was third in the NFL with seven interceptions. 1996 saw him as the starting right cornerback for 14 games.
As a three-year starter at Western Carolina, Williams was a first-team All-Southern Conference choice as a senior and twice selected to the second team. |
