| Biography: |
| When Kelly Holcomb came to the Browns from Indianapolis in 2001, his role was clear: Serve as Ty Detmer's backup clipboard handler. But when the Browns traded Detmer (wisely, as it turned out) to Detroit for a fourth-round draft pick, Holcomb became the primary backup to Tim Couch.
Holcomb, who was undrafted out of Middle Tennessee State, lacks Detmer's Heisman pedigree, but he does bring a knowledge of Bruce Arians' offense. Holcomb played for Arians in Indianapolis for four years, where he backed up Peyton Manning. At 6' 2" and 212 pounds, Holcomb is on the short side for NFL quarterbacks. But Browns coaches have been impressed by his play and mastery of the offense.
Holcomb got his first real chance to start as Tim Couch was out with elbow problems the first two weeks of the 2002 season. Holcomb shone in games against the Chiefs, completing 44 of 69 passes for over 500 yards and five touchdowns. Although Couch is the team's starter for the foreseeable future, fans can be confident that he has a backup who can take the team and win.
