2002: 36 Total Tackles - 32 Solo, 4 ASSTs, 1 Sacks, 0 Stuffs. 1 FF, 1 INT for 46 YDs, 9 PDs. Many fans hoped that Mike would win one of the starting safety postitions in 2002. That did not materialize, but Mike continued his outstanding play in the nickel defense before missing some games late in the season with injury problems. He missed 3 games with a groin injury in November and early December, then returned strong to register a sack against Tampa Bay (December) and make an exciting interception and 14-yard return for a TD against Cleveland in the January playoff game. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury on the interception return in the Cleveland game, causing him to miss the rest of the postseason play. It's hope that Mike can again bounce back from yet another of the injuries that continue to plague him.
Mike Logan was brought in as an UFA (from Jacksonville) for the 2001 season. The Steelers had needs at free safety and at the dime and nickel back positions and thought that the Pittsburgh resident was a good fit. Although Logan has not won a starting safety postion (as of the 2002 season), he has demonstrated his worth in the dime and nickel with his coverage and blitzing. Mike was a 1997 first round pick of Jacksonville, out of WVU. Most of his work at Jacksonville was in the nickel and dime packages and special teams, with a few starts at free safety. He also had some injury problems that hampered his development. His kickoff return average of 23-3 ranks third in Jaguars history. At WVU, he is fourth on the school's career list at kick-return specialist with averages of 11.3 yards on punt returns and 23.5 yards on kickoff returns. At West Virginia, he earned All-Big East Conference first-team honors as a cornerback and second-team as a return specialist his senior year. |
